Coming in June: The 2017 International Blues Challenge

Starting the first full week of June, WDIF-LP will be airing live performances from the finalists of the 2017 International Blues Challenge that was held earlier this year in Memphis, Tennessee by The Blues Foundation.

Blues societies from all over the world hold local contests and send their winners to this week-long festival of blues in Memphis every year to become the best blues band in the land! Artists compete in several different categories including Best Band, Best Solo/Duo, Best Instrumentalist, and Best Self-Produced Album.

On Monday June 5th and every weekday that week at 9:00pm, you can hear a special one-hour presentation that consists of three bands that competed in the final round of the IBC. Each performer at the competition presented a twenty-minute live show.
Then on Saturday June 10th, starting at 5:00pm, we will air a marathon of all the performances starting, culminating with performances from the winners of the event!

Winners of the 2017 IBC include:

  • 1st Place Band Winners: Dawn Tyler Watson from the Montreal Blues Society
  • 2nd Place Band Winners: The Souliz Band featuring Sugar & Spice from the Suncoast Blues Society
  • 3rd Place Band Winners: Rae Gordon & The Backseat Drivers from the Cascade Blues Association
  • 1st Place Solo/Duo Winners: Al Hill from the Nashville Blues Society
  • 2nd Place Solo/Duo Winners: Brody Buster’s One Man Band from the Kansas City Blues Society
  • Best Instrumentalist (Guitar/Band): Ben Racine from the Montreal Blues Society
  • Best Instrumentalist (Guitar/Solo): Al Hill from the Nashville Blues Society
  • Best Instrumentalist (Harmonica): Brody Buster from the Kansas City Blues Society
  • Best Self-Produced Album: JW Jones (High Temperature) from the Ottawa Blues Society

Why air it at 9:00pm? Picture this: The light of the day is starting to fade, you sit out on your front porch or in the garage, windows opened up to the warm June weather, you flip your radio on to 97.5 FM, and you end your busy day with an hour of some of the best new blues that you’ll ever hear. We can’t think of a better way to spend the evening short of being there live in person.

We hope you enjoy this special presentation of The 2017 International Blues Challenge
from The Blues Foundation!
